A 13-year-old boy is facing weapons charges after bringing a handgun and ammunition to his school classroom earlier this week, police said Wednesday.
Officers got a call about a student in the classroom with a loaded gun in his backpack at Jordan Intermediate School in Garden Grove about 9:41 a.m. Monday, according to a news release by the Garden Grove Police Department.
The 13-year-old boy allegedly had a Colt Mark IV, .38 caliber, semi-automatic handgun in his backpack and a loaded magazine in his pants pocket, police said.
Police first said they found a loaded gun in the boy's backpack, but clarified the magazine was not inside.
Four students saw the gun in the student's possession and did not report it to the school staff, Garden Grove Police Lt. Ben Staufferpolice said.
One child was a transfer student, who was sent back to his or her original campus, and the three others have been suspended and will likely not be allowed to attend Jordan Intermediate School, he said.
The handgun was registered to a family member who lives with the boy, police said.

Police also found a .22 caliber Ruger rifle at the home, but the rifle was not registered, officials said.
Parents of students were told about the incident the night it happened, police said.
The boy was booked into Orange County Juvenile Hall in connection with weapons charges.
