Gun-Wielding Man Fatally Shot by Police in Hemet

A man who allegedly wielded a gun and attempted to break into a home in a Hemet neighborhood was fatally shot by police early Monday, officials said.

Shortly before 2:30 a.m., police received calls of a man waving a gun around and yelling in the 1400 block of South State Street, according to the Hemet Police Department. Witnesses told police the man may be a resident of a nearby mobile home.

Moments later, police received another 911 call from a resident who said he had his family barricaded inside his home after the gunman was trying to force his way in.

When officers arrived, they found the suspect in a carport area and opened fire after he wielded a handgun, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect's identity will be released pending notification of next of kin.

Police recovered a gun believed to be used by the suspect.

No officers were injured during the shooting. Details on what led up to the shooting were not immediately available.
