A new study finds that cold sufferers often leave their germs on TV remotes, salt shakers and other household items, where the germs can live for two days -- or more.
Scientists at the University of Virginia made the study in the homes of 30 people with colds. Testing showed germs on all three of the salt and pepper shakers tested and six out of 10 remote controls. Other germ hot spots were light switches, doorknobs, phones, refrigerator handles and bathroom faucets.
A separate study was made on toys at pediatricians' offices. Tests showed signs of cold viruses on 20 percent of all toys tested.
The studies were presented at a joint meeting of the American Society for Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
