Herbalife Recalls Shakes for Undeclared Milk Allergen

The proteins could prompt a dangerous reaction in consumers who have severe milk allergies

Milk proteins may be in a now-recalled shake mix that is labeled dairy-free, according to Herbalife International of America.

The Los Angeles-based company voluntarily recalled packets of its Instant Healthy Meal Nutritional Shake Mix on Friday.

Consumers with severe milk allergies may have a life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume milk proteins, the company said, adding that lactose intolerance is not a milk allergy.

The affected mix was distributed in the U.S. between Jan. 16 and Feb. 16, both individually and in cartons of 12. Herbalife products are sold exclusively by independent distributors.

Herbalife said there have been no reports of illnesses to date and urged consumers and distributors to return the packets for an exchange or a refund.

The recalled packets have these lot numbers printed on the front of the packet and on the bottom of the carton:
