High Surf Slams Southern California Coast

Waves between 6 and 10 feet, with sets as high as 15 feet, were expected to pound the Southern California coast early this week.

The highest surf will continue along west and northwest-facing beaches, where rip currents will create dangerous conditions for swimmers and surfers, according to the National Weather Service.

In Ventura County, the largest surf is expected Sunday afternoon and could bring sets of waves of up to 15 feet near the Ventura Harbor, the NWS said. Much of the Ventura Pier remained closed Sunday, more than a month after powerful waves washed over the structure and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

Earlier this month, strong waves battered homes along the Malibu coast, breaking apart at least one wooden staircase and sweeping the pieces out to sea.

Forecasters said the surf may cause minor beach erosion and coastal flooding for low-lying areas such as parking lots.

Beachgoers are advised take precautions as strong rip currents and sneaker waves will create a risk of drowning and can overrun jetties and dry beaches.

The high surf advisory will expire Tuesday afternoon for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. The advisory will expire Tuesday evening for northern Orange County.
