Homemade Swords, Gun, Scythe Found on Man Arrested on Suspicion of Elder Abuse

A man with a small arsenal of improvised weapons was arrested in San Bernardino Saturday night, police said.

Ruben Vargas, 37, was allegedly threatening an elderly man with what police referred to as "an improvised stabbing weapon" at 6:30 p.m. when police were called to a residence, a San Bernardino Police Department spokesman said.

Vargas had a zip gun, multiple homemade swords and a scythe with him, according to Lt. Travis Walker.

Vargas was booked on charges of elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of an improvised firearm, Walker said.

Police were called to the location, which they have not released, for a reported violation of a court order, Walker said. Vargas consented to a search, when the weapons were found.

There was no information about whether the victim was hurt.
