Caught on Camera: Crane Collapse Damages Two Long Beach Homes

A witness captured the collapse on camera in the Long Beach neighborhood

One person suffered minor injuries and two houses were damaged Monday afternoon when a crane toppled in a Long Beach neighborhood.

Utility crews were working on overhead lines about 12:30 p.m. in the 300 block of 61st Street when the crane fell between two houses, striking the rear portion of one of the homes, according to Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Jack Crabtree. The injured individual was conscious and in stable condition when taken to a hospital, the captain said.

A homeowner who was taking video of workers replacing utility poles captured the collapse on camera. Ken Seeley said workers appeared to be using the crane to guide a pole into place.

"Nobody expected it," Seeley said. "The outriggers gave way, and the crane toppled."

The street was closed between Elm and DeForest avenues as crews worked to dismantle the crane.
