Homeowners are suing Los Angeles County and its partners, alleging a program that funds solar panels and other energy-efficient home improvements saddled them with loans they cannot afford.
The Los Angeles Times reports Wednesday that twin lawsuits target the county along with the as well as lenders Renovate America and Renew Financial.
The complaints say borrowers are now at risk of losing their homes because the loans were sold by unscrupulous contractors that weren't properly monitored.
The suits say many of those in trouble are low-income, elderly or don't speak English as their first language.
County representatives didn't respond to a request for comment. Renew Financial says it can't comment on pending litigation. Renovate America says it finds "no merit in the allegations."
