Koreatown Standoff Ends in Arrest

A 35-year-old man who allegedly threatened to kill his mother and set a building on fire was arrested by SWAT officers after an hours-long standoff in Koreatown on Sunday.

The man, whose named was not immediately released, had barricaded himself in his apartment bedroom on Hobart Boulevard. He was armed with a hammer and sharp objects and refused to come out, said Capt. Vito Palazzolo of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers said the man has a history of mental illness and has been in trouble with police before. It was not immediately clear what drove the man to barricade himself inside his homoe.

Neighbors evacuated and waited hours for the standoff to come to an end.

"I'm thinking that they prevented something, so it's good," neighbor Debbie Purev said.

The man faces charges of criminal threats, police said.
