LAPD Motorcycle Officer Injured in Downtown LA Crash

A motorcycle officer was injured Friday night in a crash in downtown Los Angeles and a suspected drunken driver was in custody.

The crash was reported about 7:55 p.m. in the area of San Pedro and 14th streets, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison. The officer was not responding to a call at the time.

The officer's motorcycle was struck by another vehicle after the driver of a Mercedes Benz went through a red light, authorities said.

The officer was hospitalized in stable condition and a "possible DUI driver" was in custody, Madison said.

You don't have the protection of the vehicles," said LAPD Officer Beverly Lewis. "Anytime you have an officer or a community member on a motorcycle, you always worry about the impact the vehicle can do to the person's body."
