LAUSD Cancels iPad Contracts

The Los Angeles Unified School District announced Monday that it would cancel its iPad contract with Apple and Pearson.

The news comes just three days after NBC4 media partner KPPC published internal emails between LAUSD officials and Apple and Pearson executives discussing the deal.

Some questioned LAUSD's handling of an effort to provide iPads to all students, a program that has faced difficulties since it began because of the difficulty in tracking devices and the high costs involved for the district.

LAUSD now plans to open its one-to-one technology project to new bids from different companies.

"Not only will this decision enable us to take advantage of an ever-changing marketplace and technology advances, it will also give us time to take into account concerns raised surrounding the [Common Core Technology Project] and receive new information from the California Department of Education regarding assessments," Superintendent John Deasy wrote in a memo obtained by KPCC.

LAUSD has already purchased 75,000 iPads. It is unclear how this decision will affect the purchase.
