New Magnet School Opens in Maywood, Will Relieve Bell High School Population

So far the new school has enrolled 480 middle school students and 720 high school students.

After months of construction, the Maywood Center for Enriched Studies Magnet opened Tuesday as other Los Angeles Unified School District institutions welcomed their doors to students as well.

As the 131st and final school to be built under the district's $20 billion commitment to build LA schools, the opening of MaCES marks the end of LAUSD's year-round school calendar.

The new school is expected to relieve overcrowding from Bell High School as 480 middle school students and 720 high school students enrolled in MaCES.

The opening of the new, Maywood school comes after the Board of Education of the Los Angeles Unifed School District unanimously approved the decision to create the establishment.

Approximately 200 teachers applied to the school, with 42 applicants being hired according to MaCES assistant principal Myrian Carmona.
