Adorable Two-Legged Chihuahua Adopted

The 4-month-old puppy was brought into the Western Riverside County Animal Shelter on Thursday as a stray

A two-legged Chihuahua dropped off at a Riverside animal shelter last week didn't take long to find a new home.

On Wednesday, Yvette Bocz was introduced to her new dog, a 4-month-old puppy nicknamed "Roo."

"Hello, sweetie pie," said a tearful Bocz, as she reached out to take hold of the dog.

The Chihuahua was brought to the Western Riverside County Animal Shelter on Thursday as a stray, said John Welsh of the Department of Animal Services.

Bocz says she may change the dog's name, although it appears she'll be sticking with the kangaroo theme.

"We're going to see what his personality comes out to. I'm thinking about maybe 'Joey.' We're not sure yet," said Bocz.

Bocz, of Ventura County, was selected from among dozens of potential suitors.

"There was a lot of applicants, a lot of phone calls, faxes, e-mails. We had people leaving things at the front door addressed to 'Roo,' including little toys" said Jackie Schart Western Riverside County Animal Shelter.

Schart added that somebody even left a little wheelchair outside the shelter on Wednesday morning.

Welsh said the black Chihuahua, which has only his hind legs and stumps for front ones, immediately charmed animal control technicians. Once the pup was featured in a few news reports, the potential adopters started calling.

Schart said the shelter narrowed the field down to 10 applicants, and then conducted interviews.

Welsh said the final decision came down to "the adopter's heartfelt, handwritten letter" and "follow-up inquiries."
