2 Men Shot, 1 Fatally, Near South Los Angeles

Two men were shot Saturday, one fatally, in the unincorporated Florence-Firestone area near South Los Angeles.

The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. in the 9000 block of Compton Avenue, near 90th Street, according to Deputy Erin Liu of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Both victims were taken to a hospital, where one man died, Liu said. The other man's condition was not immediately known.

A description of the shooter was not immediately available.

The names of the victims were not released.

The violence occurred just more than two days after a drive-by shooting in the same Florence-Firestone area that left two young men dead. Sheriff's officials said they do not believe the shootings are connected, but given the close proximity of the crimes, they will examine the possibility.

The first shooting occurred just after 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of East 68th Street, near Central Avenue. Jose Antonio Flores Velazquez and Alfredo Jose Carrera, both 24, were killed. Relatives said the pair had grown up together six houses apart on the street where they were shot. The shooting occurred in Carrera's driveway after they had parked an SUV.

Flores was a physics doctoral student at UC Irvine and had his sights set on a job at NASA, and Carrera was about to become a first-time father with his girlfriend.

Anyone with information on either shooting was asked to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or lacrimestoppers.org.
