A fiery crash between three big rigs closed a stretch of the 60 Freeway early Wednesday morning when one of the trucks carrying a load of pickles hit two other semitrailers and caught fire.
The truck hauling the vegetables slammed into two car carrier trucks parked on the shoulder near Haven Avenue, ripping the fuel container on the side of the pickle truck wide open and igniting a fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The semitrailer became engulfed in flames, but the blaze was put out promptly by the Ontario Fire Department. No injuries were reported in the wreck, which occurred about 1:15 a.m.
Less than a mile away, CHP reported another big rig wreck was blocking lanes where one semitrailer rearended another about 2:15 a.m.
CHP officials closed eastbound lanes of the 60 Freeway between Archibald and Haven avenues for five hours so crews could clean up 80,000 gallons of spilled fuel.
Lanes were open for drivers as of 6:30 a.m.
The cause of the collision remained under investigation, but CHP officials said they did not believe alcohol or drugs was a factor.
