Bolt has rivals in the same way a hammer has a rivalry with a nail. But if there’s one sprinter who stands in his way, it’s American Justin Gatlin. The Athens gold medalist laid down the fastest first-round time at 10.01 seconds, just ahead of Bolt’s 10.07 seconds.

"It wasn't the best start, it felt kind of sluggish," said Bolt, who was running just after noon on Saturday in Rio. "I'm not used to running this early in the morning in any championships."

Bolt will compete in the semifinals of the 100m dash on Sunday. The men’s 100m final is set for Sunday night.

3. Fight On Into the Finals

If you’re from Southern California, Allyson Felix is your Olympian.

The speedster from Los Angeles, who now lives in Santa Clarita, will compete Sunday in the semifinal of the 400m dash. Felix has six career Olympic medals, tying her for the most medals for anyone from USC.

The 30-year-old, a member of President Obama’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, graduated from USC with a degree in elementary education. At 18, Felix made her Olympics debut in Athens, claiming silver in the 200m. In Beijing, she captured another silver in the 200 before finally breaking through with a gold in the event in London. She also won gold in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays in 2012 to become the first female U.S. athlete since 1988 to win three gold medals at a single Olympics.

Felix topped her qualifying heat Friday, slowing to an easy jog across the line. The semis are scheduled for 4:35 p.m., finals are set for Monday at 6:45 p.m.
