Person Living on 405 Freeway Embankment Killed When SUV Careens Off Roadway

One person who authorities believe lived on a freeway embankment was killed this morning and another person was injured in a single vehicle rollover crash on the southbound 405 Freeway in Van Nuys.

The crash was reported about 3:20 a.m. and involved a cream colored SUV tumbling approximately 50 feet down an embankment off the freeway before it landed on its side below the Roscoe Boulevard onramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The person who was killed was "presumed to have been living on the embankment beside the freeway," according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

One person was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a local trauma center in unknown condition, Prange said.

The ages, genders and names of the victims were not immediately released.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

A SigAlert was issued until at least 7 a.m. for the No. 4 lane of the San Diego Freeway and the Roscoe Boulevard onramp to the freeway, the CHP said.
