Eight Small Brush Fires Extinguished on Side of 5 Freeway

The small brush fires were reported early Thursday alongside the freeway north of Castaic

Firefighters extinguished eight small brush fires along a mile-long stretch of the northbound 5 Freeway early Thursday north of Castaic.

The first of the fires was reported around 3:25 a.m., according to the  California Highway Patrol online incident log. Seven more brush fire reports were called in around  4 a.m.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Supervisor Michael Pittman told City News Service the fires were reported between Templin Highway and Smokey Bear Road. The fires  covered about an acre and all were accessible from the northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway.

Details regarding a cause of the fires were not immediately available. Investigators remained at the scene Thursday morning.

Winds in the area were about 10 miles per hour as temperatures began rising during what is expected to be one of the warmest days of the year in Southern California. Heat advisories are in effect for a widespread part of the region.
