Big Rig Fire Brings Morning Drive to Standstill

Morning commuters were caught in a traffic backup through Norwalk as crews extinguished the big rig fire

A big rig fire forced a closure Friday morning on the southbound 5 Freeway in the Norwalk area.

The fire was extinguished at about 6:15 a.m., but traffic backed up near Norwalk Boulevard at the start of the morning commute. Aerial video showed a line of vehicles extending from the site of the big rig fire south to Paramount Boulevard.

Some drivers got out of their vehicles as traffic remained at a standstill. A front-end loader removed debris, including the contents of the trailer, from the freeway.

The truck driver was not injured. Details regarding the cause of the fire were not immediately available.

Earlier Friday, a fiery big rig crash on the 710 Freeway near Imperial Highway killed the truck's driver.
