Freeway Lanes Remain Closed Due to Bridge Fire Inspection

Commuters were advised to use the 60 and 605 freeways to avoid the stretch of closed freeway

Lanes remained closed Wednesday morning on a major freeway south of downtown Los Angeles as authorities continue to inspect a bridge after a fire late Monday.

The fire shut down the entire 5 Freeway for more than six hours in Commerce Tuesday morning. One southbound lane was reopened Wednesday morning.

Commuters were advised to use the 60 and 605 freeways to avoid the stretch of closed freeway.

The lanes might reopen Wednesday afternoon, officials at the site told NBC4.

The fire broke out along a riverbed near the Slauson Avenue exit around 11:30 p.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The fire was doused by 1 a.m., but it left the underside of the freeway bridge visibly scorched.
