6-Year-Old Girl Killed by Suspected Drunken Driver Identified

The child was identified as Grace Aguilar, of Fullerton, according to the coroner's office.

The coroner's office Sunday released the name of the 6-year-old girl who was mowed down by a suspected drunken driver piloting an SUV on a Fullerton sidewalk.

The child was identified as Grace Aguilar, of Fullerton, according to the coroner's office.

The crash was at about 2:15 p.m. Saturday on a sidewalk in the 1400 block of Lombard Street, Fullerton police Sgt. Jon Radus said.

The driver, Maximo Delgado, 52, was driving his 1990 Toyota 4Runner east on Gage Avenue when he tried to make a southbound turn on Lombard Street, Radus said.

Delgado lost control of his vehicle and drove onto the sidewalk where he struck Aguilar, Radus continued. Delgado then continued to drive on the sidewalk and then reentered the roadway where he hit a parked car on Lombard Street.

Delgado's car stopped there and he stayed at the scene until police arrived, Radus said. Police then did a breath test on Delgado and allegedly found that his blood alcohol level was .23 percent, far above the presumed level of drunken driving, .08 percent.

Neighbors said Aguilar was playing with her cousin in the front yard of a home just a few doors down from her own when she was struck.

She was transported to a trauma center where she died shortly after her arrival.

Delgado may have been doing contract work at a home in the neighborhood before he got behind the wheel, according to neighbors.

He was arrested and booked on driving under the influence of alcohol, and vehicular manslaughter, according to Radus. He remained jailed in lieu of $2 million bail.
