6-Year-Old Girl Playing on Sidewalk Fatally Struck by Suspected Drunken Driver

Police did a breath test on the driver and allegedly found that his alcohol level was .23 percent, far above the legal limit of .08 percent

A six-year-old girl who was playing on a sidewalk was fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver who was arrested after he crashed his SUV in Fullerton on Saturday, a Fullerton police sergeant said.

The crash took place about 2:15 p.m. on a sidewalk in the 1400 block of Lombard Street, Fullerton police Sgt. Jon Radus said.

The driver, who policed identified as 52-year-old Maximo Delgado was driving his 1990 Toyota 4Runner east on Gage Avenue when he tried to make a southbound turn on Lombard Street, Radus said.

Delgado lost control of his vehicle and drove onto the sidewalk where he struck the little girl, Radus continued. Delgado then continued to drive on the sidewalk and then reentered the roadway where he hit a parked car on Lombard Street.

Delgado's car stopped there and he stayed at the scene until police arrived, Radus said. Police then did a breath test on Delgado and allegedly found that his alcohol level was .23 percent, far above the legal limit of .08 percent.

The little girl was transported to a trauma center where she died shortly after her arrival. Her name was withheld pending notification of kin.

Delgado was arrested and booked on driving under the influence of alcohol, and vehicular manslaughter, according to Radus. He was being held in lieu of $2 million bail.

Any witnesses to this tragic crash were asked to call Fullerton police at 714-738-5313. Tipsters can also call OC Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS.
