Sheriff's SUV Hits 8-Year-Old Student Outside Adelanto Elementary School

Boy hospitalized with minor bruises and cuts to leg

An 8-year-old student was dropped off in front of an elementary school, ran behind his mother's vehicle into the street and was struck by a sheriff's SUV, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The incident happened Wednesday shortly before 9 a.m. outside Adelanto Elementary School, located at 17931 Jonathan St., said Jodi Miller of the sheriff's department.

"Nessia Fountain was traveling south on Jonathan road. She stopped her vehicle in the southbound lane in front of Adelanto Elementary School and allowed her 8-year-old son to exit the vehicle into the roadway," according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

A marked sheriff's Chevy Tahoe traveling northbound on Jonathan Street struck the child. Witnesses said Sgt. Wendell Anderson was driving about 4-6 mph, according to the department.

The boy -- who is a student at the school -- was transported to Victor Valley Hospital with minor bruises and cuts to his left leg.

The collision is under investigation, according to the sheriff's office.
