The NKLA Adoption Weekend, which is one of the largest animal adoption events around, returned to the La Brea Tar Pits.
By 5 p.m. Sunday, organizers said 440 animals were adopted over the weekend - that's 40 more than their goal. More than 1,000 dogs and cats were available for adoption.
Best Friends Animal Society hosted the Hancock Park event, which featured booths covering the full spectrum of animal companionship and pet-sweet love.
It was free to attend, and the cost to adopt started at $25. The fee included spaying/neutering and shots.
The one thing to do, besides making a forever connection, was to walk the full spread of booths and areas, the better to see all the animals who made the trip to the tar pits. Dogs and cats went home with their new families throughout the day.
"Food trucks, exhibitors, and celebrity appearances" were planned.
In two years, cat and dog deaths in LA animal shelters have been reduced by more than 9,000, said Marc Peralta of Best Friends Animal Society Los Angeles
