Man With Knife Killed in Gardena Police Shooting

A man who was wounded in a police shooting in Gardena died at a hospital, authorities said Tuesday morning.

Gardena police responded to a report of a man with a knife. The shooting occurred at about 9:55 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Rosecrans and Denker avenues, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which was assisting Gardena police with the investigation into the shooting.

The officer first used a stun gun, according to the sheriff's department. 

The man armed with the knife lunged at an officer before the shooting, according to the sheriff's department. The officer who responded to the call, shot one round at the suspect who was struck once in the upper body, the sheriff's department siad. 

Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the scene and took the man to a hospital, where he died, Navarro-Suarez said.

No officers were injured.
