Officers Shoot Woman Who Was Pointing Gun at Own Head, Police Say

Police wounded a woman they say had earlier pointed a gun to her head threatening suicide at a residence in Reseda Sunday.

Officers sent at 7:37 a.m. to the 8000 block of Hesperia Avenue on a report of a woman with a gun found a woman armed with a handgun pointed at her head, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Officers attempted to "de-escalate the situation by verbalizing with the suspect to drop the weapon," a police statement said, noting that the department's Mental Evaluation Unit was contacted.

At some point, while the officers were talking to the woman, an officer-involved shooting occurred. There's no word yet on what precipitated the OIS against a suicidal person.

The woman was struck by gunfire and taken to an area hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

The woman who was shot by police had some sort of connection to the home where officers found her, the LAPD said.

No officers were injured and a handgun was recovered at the scene, police said.

The OIS was being investigated by the LAPD's Use of Force unit, the Inspector General and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's JSID shooting team.
