Auto Club Dragway: Get Ready to Roll, SoCalers

Want to take your wheels for a spin? You can.

There's a thrill of seeing fenders fly by, all muscle and vroom, with only a gas-shimmery puff of air in their wake.

But we zoom-excited fans in the stands? We're far above the track, and our car? It's in the parking lot, a sunshade up in the windshield.

That's set to change in Fontana on Saturday, Feb. 22 when "(v)ehicles of all makes and models and drivers of all ages and experience can bring their street legal ride to Auto Club Dragway to Race the Strip, Not the Street..."

So that vroom? It can be yours, in a track setting, described by the Dragway as "the perfect way to show off your skills in a safe, controlled environment." The Automobile Club of Southern California and the National Hot Rod Association have lent their "overwhelming support," in addition to other car-focused organizations.

Cost to lay down some off-the-street heat? Twenty bucks. Or 10 to watch, if you like the thrill from a distance.

Should you drive, though, you'll get a peek at everything in the oval, from the "staging lanes to the Christmas Tree" (yep, those are the lights that get things moving).

It's a big debut for the zoom season, given that the dragway shuttered at the start of 2012 over noise issues, and a fresh wall was built. Lots of construction and refurb photographs are up on the track's Facebook page, if you want to revisit all that was done.
