Mother Runs Off After Giving Birth Near Riverbed

When authorities arrived, they found a newborn girl with the man who had called 911.

A mother and her newborn were in good condition Monday afternoon after authorities responded to a call about a baby delivered and left behind in Santa Clarita, said the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

Santa Clarita Sheriff's deputies and the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to call shortly after 5:50 a.m. after a man called 911 reporting a woman was giving birth at a homeless encampment in a Canyon Country wash that was located behind the Metrolink Station at Via Princessa and Whites Canyon Road.

When authorities arrived, they found a newborn girl with the man who had called 911. The man told police the mother ran off into the riverbed immediately after giving birth, deputies said.

The mother was located at 6:45 a.m. near Soledad Canyon Road, said Tom Bryski of the Sheriff's Department's Santa Clarita station.

The mother and baby were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital where they were listed in good condition.

The, who identified herself only as Nicole, went back to the wash in the afternoon. She again taken to the hospital.

Detectives are investigating the incident.

It is unknown whether the mother faces any charges.
