At 9:48 a.m. – the exact moment of the attack on Pearl Harbor 73 years ago – the USS Iowa observed a moment of silence during a memorial service Sunday to remember the lives lost.
For more than two decades, San Pedro Harbor was the homeport for many of the ships attacked, including the battleships California, Pennsylvania and Arizona.
"Many sailors who were killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor were part of the San Pedro community fabric," said Dave Way, Curator of the Pacific Battleship Center. "Battleship sailors enjoyed liberty on San Pedro streets after long deployments, cheered for their shipmates during fleet competitions at Trona Field, and met girls for sodas along Sixth Street."
Sunday’s memorial service onboard the Battleship Iowa involved the lowering of the American flag, the singing of “Aloha Oe,” and bugler calls.
This event was part of Iowa Remembers, the annual series of events and ceremonies presented by the Pacific Battleship Center (PBC) aboard Iowa.
