Big Bear: Village Fall Wine Walk

Spend the middle Saturday of September sauntering/sipping among the businesses of the mountain town.

THAT CHANGE IN THE AIR: Summer has a way of arriving before, well, summer, and spring can make a brief cameo around Valentine's Day. Winter? It's definitely in the stores, in the form of snowflake ornaments and snowmen-covered clothing, before the late-December solstice, but of all the seasons, fall might have the most enchanting early entrance. We start to speak of a transformation in the air, early in the morning and just after sundown, in August, and then we talk of how the light is growing softer, or hailing from a different sky-down slant. And if we're sensing these changes in the lower elevations, you can imagine that the mountains are slightly to greatly accelerated in this regard. In fact, Big Bear's annual Village Fall Wine Walk is officially on a summer's day, but the last Saturday of summer 2017 will probably feel a lot like fall to many attendees. And that final Saturday is...

SEPT. 16, the date for the upcoming, get-to-know-the-village event. Some 28 businesses will participate, which means ticket holders can stop in for a wine tasting at a plethora of venues. You'll get a dozen wine tasting tickets in all, and a souvenir glass, for $35, should you purchase your entry ahead of Sept. 4 (it's $45 after that date). If you just want to nibble around? That's twenty dollars. Beers, too, will play a part, and shopping is part of the happening. The Wine Walk has a mid-afternoon start, with a 7 p.m. wrap time, meaning you can be back at your hotel room or cabin by the time that fall-style chill starts to set in. Will it be as cold as it got last winter in Big Bear, when a lot of snow fell? Not at all; late summer is mighty mellow up the mountain. But if you're looking for hints of autumn in the atmosphere, and some great sips and a great, out-and-about scene, ponder crossing the summer-fall bridge this year in Big Bear.
