Brush Fire Prompted Voluntary Evacuations in Northeast San Fernando Valley

A brush fire prompted voluntary evacuations Wednesday near Lakeview Terrace before it was knocked down and contained at 62 acres.

The fire was initially reported at 2 acres at 2:38 p.m. in the 11700 block of Terra Vista Way.

Water-dropping helicopters and planes could be seen making numerous runs, turning active flame into white smoke as crews were airlifted into the area to conduct ground operations.

About 400 firefighters were assigned to the blaze, according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Winds of up to 30 mph and temperatures around 90 degrees fueled the blaze, which burned in medium brush.

The fire threatened some homes on its south flank, but no structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

The fire erupted during a day when a red flag warning was in effect, meaning winds, heat and low humidity combine to create extreme fire conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning was in effect from early Wednesday through Thursday for the mountains, valleys and inland Orange County, forecasters said.

"Moderate Santa Ana winds and very low humidity will create critical weather conditions through Thursday," the report said.
