Caltrans to Build Freeway Bridge for Mating Mountain Lions

Caltrans to Build Bridge to Help Mountain Lions Mate

California officials are planning to build a bridge over the 101 Freeway to help mountain lions that are looking for love in all the wrong places.

The California Department of Transportation announced on Saturday it is seeking $2 million from the federal government to construct the wildlife corridor in Agoura Hills that would allow mountain lions to cross the freeway to mate.

Biologists who have studied the cats for years said that being cut off from other mountain lions is causing in-breeding among the animals.

Caltrans' Los Angeles director Carrie Bowen said the bridge would also reduce the risk of collisions caused by wildlife trying to cross the 101.

Mountain lions have been killed crossing the 101 at Agoura Hills, most recently in October, according to City News Service.
