Pregnant Woman Hurt in Echo Park Pizza Shop Crash

The vehicle did not appear to cause any outward structural damage

A pregnant woman was hospitalized after a car landed inside an Echo Park pizza restaurant late Tuesday afternoon, according to fire officials.

The 20-year-old pedestrian was dragged as a red Acura slammed into the restaurant's storefront, said Brian Humphrey with the Los Angeles Fire Department. She sustained minor injuries.

The driver of a red Acura, who was reportedly driving with a suspended license, lost control of the vehicle, which smashed into the empty dining room of Pizza Buona at Sunset Boulevard and Alvarado Street, Humphrey said.

Photos from the scene taken by restaurant owner Israel Palacios show shattered glass at the wide front door of the restaurant, and strewn benches, tables and chairs inside the pizza shop that has been a neighborhood staple since 1959.

The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. about one block down from responding City Fire Station 20.

Palacios said it's not the first time he's seen something like this.

"This type of accident happened almost 20 years ago,"  Palacios said. "At that time, there was a little baby that was killed. We've always wanted some cement barriers in front of the restaurant, and I don't know what it's going to take for the city to do something."
