Sprinter Carmelita Jeter Won't Compete in Rio Olympics

A quads injury will prevent the second-fastest woman ever from competing with Team USA at the 2016 Summer Games

Carmelita "The Jet" Jeter, a three-time Olympic medalist and second-fastest woman all time, will not compete in the Rio Summer Games, the sprinter said in an Instagram post Thursday.

In a video posted to her account, the Southern California-native said a leg injury will prevent her from attending the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in July.

"Unfortunately due to me re-aggravating my left quads, I will not be at 2016 Olympic trials," she said in a video addressing her fans. "You guys know that it's been a rough two years for me having two torn quads and a quads surgery. So, I just want to thank you so much, so much for being with me all these years, and the next chapter is going to be great."

Jeter, 36, tore a quad in the U.S. Championships final June 26. She also suffered a right quad injury in May 2013 and went 10 months between races in 2013 and 2014, NBC Sports reported.

At the 2009 Shanghai Golden Grand Prix, Jeter became the second-fastest woman all time with a 10.64 in the 100-meter dash.
