Gunbattle Leaves One Dead After Chase Into Carson Park

The man was attempting to break into a residence when officers fired, according to Long Beach police

An officer-involved shooting left a man dead after what police described as a running gunbattle early Wednesday in Carson.

Officers remained at several crime scenes in the area, including a park and fuel station. The fatal shooting occurred in the 20000 block of Hillford Avenue after officers, guided by a police helicopter, chased the subject on foot.

Long Beach police responded to the area after a woman flagged down an officer at about 5:45 a.m. near Pacific Coast Highway and Long Beach Boulevard, said Long Beach Deputy Chief Robert Luna.

A witness told NBC4 she heard a man and woman arguing at about 3 a.m.

"The woman was claiming that she was threatened by possibly an ex-boyfriend armed with a weapon," said Luna.

A Los Angeles Police Department aerial unit located the subject at a nearby fuel station. A ground unit was disptached to the station and the subject shot at an officer, according to police.

A foot pursuit led to a park, where the subject exchanged gunfire with officers, Luna said. The park was surrounded by crime scene tape Wednesday morning.

The subject was attempting to break into a residence when he was shot and killed, police said.

"We're immediately thinking the suspect is armed, he's threatened other people," said Luna.

The subject, his identity was not immediately available, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman involved in the argument with the subject was being interviewed by police.

No officers were injured.
