Family of Boy Found Dead in Closet Was Reported to Social Workers Six Times

Four of the reports involved the 11-year-old boy who was found dead by his stepfather

The family of a severely malnourished 11-year-old boy found dead in a closet was the subject of six previous reports to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, the department's director confirmed Monday.

Two of the reports dating to 2002 were filed before Yonatan Daniel Aguilar was born. The four other reports involved the boy, director Philip L. Browning said Monday.

All of the reports were investigated, but none led to an open case that would have required supervision and services, Browning added.

The department's review is ongoing, he said. The social workers consulted with doctors, a hospital social worker, school counselor, therapist, school coach and teachers as part of the investigation.

The boy was in school and participating in social services programs when the department last had contact with the him in 2012. Each law enforcement investigation concluded no crime was committed, according to the DCFS statement.

More details were not available.

"By law, we cannot disclose any information, including confirmation, regarding services that may have been provided to this family or address," the agency told NBC4.

The boy's mother, 39-year-old Veronica Aguilar of Echo Park, was charged Thursday with murder and child abuse resulting in death after prosecutors alleged the child died due to neglect and severe malnutrition. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office had yet to reveal the cause of death.

The boy was discovered in the family's closet by his stepfather.

The recommended bail amount was set at $2 million, and if Aguilar is convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life in state prison.
