The fire was extinguished around 9:45 p.m. Officials said the family was alerted to the blaze by a smoke alarm.

"I went into my bedroom and my mattress and all my clothes were totally on fire," said Mattie Thompson, a tenant of the apartment that caught fire.

A 10-year-old child was taken to Kaiser Permanente in Anaheim for smoke inhalation. It’s unknown whether the hospitalized child is the same child who caused the fire.
