Coast Guard Searches for Missing Boater Off Southern California Coast

The man disappeared Tuesday as he sailed between Los Alamitos and Santa Catalina Island

A 65-year-old Sierra Madre man was reported missing Tuesday night after he disappeared while sailing his 15-foot boat between Los Alamitos and Santa Catalina Island.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter is part of the team looking for John Hull, who texted his daughter Tuesday to tell her he would be home Tuesday afternoon. The woman contacted Long Beach police after her father did not return.

The Coast Guard launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and a 45-foot Response Boat from Station Los Angeles-Long Beach. The Coast Guard also issued a picture of Hull and his boat, the Panda II.

He set sail with a group early Monday from Los Alamitos to Two Harbors on Santa Catalina Island, according to the Coast Guard.

"After falling behind the group, Hull text messaged his daughter to inform her he was turning around, and would be home later Tuesday afternoon," said Adam Eggers, of the Coast Guard.

The Panda II is a white-hulled sailboat with an aqua-blue line near the deckline.
