Colorado Street Bridge Bash

It's a standout landmark in a town brimming with history.

The Golden State has so many fascinating areas of interest that we could all band together and build a library called "The Golden State Library," dedicated to nothing but the redwoods and the Gold Rush and the eruption of Lassen Peak and sand castles and a million other topics.

Bridges would get their own aisle, for California is home to the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge, and Foresthill Bridge, and the glorious Golden Gate, and one that is dear to the heart of not only Pasadenans but to residents around Southern California.

It's the Colorado Street Bridge, which is not only rife with history, local legend, and sheer architectural beauty, but it is one of the initial sights one sees if one is entering Pasadena by freeway from the west.

This grand entrance, and a grand symbol of the Crown City, is so treasured it gets its own yearly party. The festivity is deemed "Pasadena's biggest and best block party," no less, by no less than the Pasadena Heritage, which oversees the event.

The 2016 date is Saturday, July 16, day-of tickets are twenty bucks, advance tickets are a bit less, and the bridge is the scene of the soiree. (It's worth mentioning that, because it isn't often that the party for something is on the thing being celebrated.)

Food booths, live tunes, a silent disco, and kid-type activities in Defenders Park are on the docket. Want to stroll the bridge with a fancy brew? There are a few no-host bars, too.

If it seems to you that the Colorado Street Bridge recently had a big birthday, it did, in 2013. That was the elegant structure's centennial year, and while photographs of Pasadena exist before its construction, it is difficult to picture the city without it.

Celebrate a span that's spanned the decades, and from one century to the next, all while remaining one of the most notable bridges in the state, and even beyond. Surely any library dedicated to California would have a section devoted to this beautiful, storied, and oh-so-airy landmark.
