Covina Officer Who Died in Crash ID'd

The officer was on duty when crashed on Tuesday afternoon at an intersection

The Covina motorcycle officer who died after a crash on Tuesday was identified as 28-year-old Jordan Corder, the son of a retired Covina police officer, police said.

Corder was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition Tuesday afternoon following a collision with an SUV.

"Our department is grieving," said Covina police Capt. Daryl Webster during an evening press conference. "We will never be the same without Jordan."

The collision occurred at Citrus and Puente avenues shortly before 2 p.m. Corder was on duty at the time.

The officer was going south on Citrus in the number one lane when the driver of an SUV traveling north on Citrus made a left turn onto Puente Street in front of the officer, who was thrown from his bike onto the street, according to police.

The 75-year-old driver of the SUV, which sustained major front-end damage, was also taken to a hospital, but a condition report was not immediately available.

Corder became a motorcycle officer in May and had earned numerous awards from Mothers Against Drunk Driving for DUI enforcement, Webster said. He had been with the Covina Police Department for seven years, Webster said.

"My heart is broken for them. We're a family and we love each other," retired Covina Police Lieutenant Scott Pierson said.

Pierson is a close friend of Corder's father, Mark Corder, a retired captain with the Covina Police Department.

"They were very close, they did as much together as any father and son possibly could," Pierson said. "(Jordan's) the type of guy any man would want his daughter to go out with. Just an honest, fun-loving, caring, good individual."
