A cyclist was killed when he was struck in two separate hit-and-run crashes in South El Monte Saturday.
Heriberto Ruiz was first hit as he was being overtaken on Rosemead Boulevard north of the 60 Freeway at around 2:50 a.m, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said. It is believed he died from the injuries he suffered.
Ruiz was then hit again by a minivan, which also collided with another vehicle that was stopping to help at the scene.
Both drivers fled. The second vehicle was described as a late 2000 model white minivan. There was no description available for the first vehicle.
Ruiz's family members say the 47-year-old may have been riding home after visiting a friend when he was hit.
"He was a good guy, would give you the shirt off his back. He was my baby brother," said Frank Ruiz as he fought back tears. "If anybody knows anything, it'd be nice if, you know, just give a call to the sheriff's department. We just want closure."
Rosemead Boulevard was shut south and northbound near the 60 Freeway on-ramp.
