A girl was hospitalized with major injuries Saturday when the horse she was riding at a birthday celebration was struck and killed by a DUI suspect in the Riverside County community of Mead Valley.
The crash in the Inland Empire on the 21000 block of Markham Street was reported at 8:16 p.m. in front of a large group of people attending the party, the California Highway Patrol.
CHP Sgt. Erick Helvie said that witnesses reported a vehicle traveling at 80 mph, which was well over the posted speed limit. In addition, the horse was believed to be female, and witnesses said the mare was pregnant.
The girl riding the horse and the DUI suspect were hospitalized with what Helvie described as "major" injuries.
