Deputy Wounded, Suspect Killed in Exchange of Gunfire in Riverside County Neighborhood

A deputy who responded to a domestic disturbance was hospitalized Wednesday morning in stable condition with a gunshot wound he suffered in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect who was subsequently killed in the unincorporated Lake Hills neighborhood near Riverside.

The shooting was reported about 7:10 p.m. Tuesday in the 17700 block of Cedarwood Drive, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect shot at one of the deputies who responded to the call, striking him, officials said.

Deputies returned fire, killing the suspect. The wounded deputy was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition, the sheriff's department said.

"Our deputy is okay and resting. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers," the sheriff's department tweeted. "Let's also keep all of our deputies/officers and first responders in our thoughts and prayers."

The name of the suspect was not immediately disclosed.
