Double Stabbing of Elderly Couple May be Murder-Attempted Suicide, Authorities Say

An 83-year-old woman was killed and an 89-year-old man was in critical condition Saturday in what authorities described as a possible murder-attempted suicide in unincorporated South Whittier.

It was reported at about 11:20 a.m. in the 14500 block of Allegan Street, Deputy Edmo Luna of the Sheriff's Information Bureau said.

The 83-year-old woman was dead at the scene from at least two stab wounds to the upper body, Luna said.

The 89-year-old man also had several stab wounds to the upper body and was taken by paramedics to a hospital where he is listed in critical condition, Luna said.

One family member was at the scene and was interviewed by homicide detectives, Luna said.

"There appears to be no sign of forced entry into the location and it appears as though it possibly could have been a murder/(attempted) suicide with the 89-year-old male stabbing the 83-year-old female and then himself," Luna said.

The investigation was continuing.
