Downtown Los Angeles Apartment Fire Damages Could Triple

A Dec. 8 fire downtown caused most of the damage to a neighboring building that houses several city agencies

The damage estimates for an arson fire that gutted an apartment building under construction last month could triple as city officials say the blaze damaged a city-owned tower next door.

The Dec. 8 fire destroyed about half of the da Vinci apartment complex's 520 units, causing up to $30 million in damages.

But it also damaged a 16-story building at 221 Figueroa Street that housed city park staff and the departments of aging and animal services, that could push costs as high as $100 million, said Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas.

"The exposures were significant," Terrazas said. "There was significant damage to those buildings."

There was so much heat it blew out windows and melted floors next door, Terrazas said.

No arrests have been made. Investigators are still hoping someone comes forward with information about the fire that could lead to a break in the case.
