Security Guard Accused of Discharging Gun at Fashion Island Faces Arraignment

Marcos Gurrola is accused of exiting his vehicle and discharging a handgun in the direction of the Macy's building

A security guard accused of discharging a gun Saturday at Fashion Island is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in Santa Ana.

Marcos Gurrola, 42, of Garden Grove, faces 54 felony counts of shooting at an unoccupied building and two felony counts of aggravated assault. Arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Gurrola allegedly exited his Honda Civic on Saturday afternoon in the Macy's parking lot at Fashion Island and discharged 54 rounds from a Glock .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun in the direction of the Macy's building. None of the rounds struck the building, but a woman and her 4-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries when they were pushed by a crowd of shoppers attempting to avoid gunfire, prosecutors said.

Gurrola surrendered to Newport Beach officers. He told investigators he did not intend to shoot anyone at the crowded shopping area and that he discharges guns to relieve stress, police told NBC4 Monday.

Police found ammunition for several different weapons inside the vehicle, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office.

During the investigation, Gurrola was linked to a Nov. 16, 2011, case involving 10 rounds discharged from a firearm at Fashion Island. That case was reported to police, but no arrest had been made.
