A grizzly scene on the Pomona Freeway just east of the 71 Monday morning.
California Highway Patrol Sargeant Keith Phillips says two vehicles, a Lexus and a Mustang convertible, were parked on the side of the freeway just below the 71/60 interchange bridge and just above Garey Avenue. A gas tank was found nearby leading investigators to believe one of the vehicles had run out of gas.
Just before 4 a.m., for an unknown reason, a semi-truck, not carrying a trailer, veered off the freeway in the eastbound lanes and slammed into the two vehicles on the side. Both drivers were outside the vehicles -- a female was pronounced dead at the scene, the body of a male was found thrown 50 feet below onto Garey Avenue.
The semi driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The eastboudn 60 Freeway was closed with traffic being re-routed to the southbound 71 Freeway.
