Red Flag Warnings Extended

Red flag warnings are in effect for L.A and Ventura Counties through Saturday evening.

Santa Ana winds howled through the Southland Saturday, and fire officials added extra engines to compensate for increased fire danger.

The Los Angeles Fire Department deployed five engines to brush fire prone areas along the rim of the San Fernando Valley, in Mission Hills, Chatsworth, West Hills, Sylmar, and Canoga Park, said department spokesman Erik Scott.

From the mountains to the coast, Southern California was under a red flag or high wind warning Saturday morning. Those portions of the Southland under red flag warnings are expected to have single-digit humidity, which means increased fire risk.

Red flag warnings, which started Friday, are in effect for portions of Los Angeles and Ventura counties until midnight. That time was modified from 6 p.m., when weather officials initially expected the winds to calm down.

But before those quintessentially-LA winds subside, residents throughout the county will have to endure gusts between 60 and 70 mph in the mountains, and 45 to 55 mph across the coast and valleys.

Gusts in Malibu reached close to 70 mph Saturday morning, and Freemont Canyon saw gusts more than 80 mph. Newhall reached 61 mph, and Simi Valley’s gusts clocked in at 48 mph.

Residents Tweeted Saturday morning about strong winds rattling their homes in Simi Valley, Santa Clarita, Sylmar, Glendora and Encino Canyon.
