Firefighters Help Horse Get Unstuck From Muddy Situation

The horse was uninjured in the rescue, but he was stressed, owner says

Firefighters utilized a high point rope system Sunday to pull out a horse who had been stuck in the mud up to the breastbone for at least 90 minutes at the Hansen Dam in Lake View Terrace.

Firefighters and paramedics dispatched at 9:31 a.m. to 12100 W. Osborne St. reported that the animal's rider had already taken himself out of the mud when they arrived, said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Rescuers assessed the situation and determined they would hoist up the uninjured horse with rope because of its location in the mud, Stewart said.

At about 11:10 a.m., firefighters used a "high-point" rope system to extract the uninjured, but exhausted -- and stressed (according to its owner) animal from the mud, she said.

The animal was being evaluated.
