1 Dead, 9 Hospitalized in Freeway Crash

A passenger van ended up in a concrete drainage channel below the freeway

One person died and nine victims were hospitalized Thursday morning in a crash on a San Bernardino County freeway that sent a large passenger van into a drainage channel.

The deceased victim was ejected from one of several vehicles involved in the crash on the westbound 10 Freeway near Cedar Avenue in Fontana. Nine other people were hospitalized with injuries.

The van involved in the crash landed in a concrete drainage channel about 15 feet below the freeway, according to fire officials.

The van driver told California Highway Patrol officers he was traveling at about 65 mph when traffic in front of his vehicle slowed. He swerved to avoid the slowdown and the van struck a tree before it rolled into the ditch, CHP officers said.
